Cubs sweep weekend, take top spot in HJHL South Division

The Medicine Hat Dynamic Industrial Cubs won both their games over the weekend.

First, a dominant 8-1 win over the Rocky Rams at the Kinplex on Friday, followed by a 4-1 road win over the Cannex Cochrane Generals on Saturday.

The scoring in Friday’s game started early as Cole Fisher opened things up with a goal just 43 seconds into the game. The assist went to Colby Gulliver.

Randen Collier would score at 8:27 into the first to extend the lead to 2-0 for the Cubs. Lucas Dulle picked up the assist.

Exactly seven minutes later, Fisher would get his second of the game to make it 3-0 for the Cubs. Assists on the goal went to Treyden Kleinkneckt and Jackson Brassard.

In the second period, the Cubs struck again at the 6:19 mark on a Jesse Klimosko goal assisted by Nolen Sutherland and Jacob Hazzard.

The Rams would get their only goal of the game just 23 seconds later, from Xzayden Beaverbones. Assists went to Maximus Bigchild and Tyler Hanson.

Brodie Heimbecker made it 5-1 for the Cubs, scoring a power-play goal at the 10:58 mark. Goaltender Hudson Corbett would get the assist after passing the puck up.

The Cubs’ power play struck again at 15:41 with a goal from Kleinknecht assisted by Fisher.

Heading into the third period up 6-1, the Cubs would pick up a few more.

Gulliver at 3:54, assisted by Fisher, and Finke just 52 seconds later, assisted by Arlo Heal.

Corbett would stop 15 of 16 shots in the Cubs’ win.

Maddyn McCrindle stopped 42 of 50 shots in the Rams’ loss.

Saturday’s game in Cochrane was scoreless through the first period.

In the second, the Cubs found their offence early. At the 4:07 mark, Hazzard scored a power-play marker assisted by Sutherland and Kade Dickie.

Then, two minutes and 13 seconds later, Reeve Zacharias would make it 2-0 on a goal assisted by Tash Armstrong and Heimbecker.

Special teams would continue to be a factor in the third period.

Sutherland scored a power-play marker at 4:02, assisted by Kleinknecht and Ryker Watson to make it 3-0 for the Cubs.

The Generals got on the board at 9:30 on a goal from Nolan Smith assisted by Ty Barry.

Heimbecker would close out the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 16:37, assisted by Hazzard and Klimosko.

Corbett had a strong showing in net for the Cubs, turning aside 31 of 32 shots for the win.

Generals Goaltender Owen Hall Chay stopped 37 of 41 shots in the loss.

Next up for the Cubs is a game Friday in Strathmore against the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings.

Following that, the Cubs will play three more road games before hosting the Generals on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The Cubs hold the top spot in the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s Gary Wournell South Division with a 3-1 record.

The Carstar Okotoks Bisons also have a 3-1 record, but the Cubs hold the tiebreaker with all three wins in regulation, compared to two for the Bisons.
