Medicine Hat to celebrate first official Good Neighbour Day

Oct 2, 2026 | 9:49 AM

Medicine Hat is officially recognizing Good Neighbour Day for the first time this weekend.

The City of Medicine Hat has proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, as the inaugural Good Neighbour Day, and it will be observed in the city annually on the first Saturday of October.

The initiative is a collaboration between the city and the Neighbourhood Associations of Medicine Hat and Area.

Good Neighbour Day had previously been informally recognized in the community.

The City said the annual day intends to celebrate community connections and the people who help make neighbourhoods welcoming places to live.

“Good Neighbour Day is a reminder that community starts right outside our front door and it’s an opportunity to celebrate the kindness, generosity and sense of community that define Medicine Hat,” Mayor Linnsie Clark said in a statement.

“Strong communities begin with strong neighbourhoods, and strong neighbourhoods are built through meaningful connections,” she added.

“Whether organizing an activity, checking in on someone, lending a helping hand or simply saying hello, making these connections can have a meaningful impact that helps our community flourish.”

There are no formal citywide events planned for Saturday, but residents are encouraged to mark the occasion by connecting with their neighbours.

Suggested activities include group walks, community cleanups, door decorating contests, random acts of kindness, coffee or potluck gatherings, board game nights, picnics and driveway concerts.

Residents can also nominate a Good Neighbour or share a story about why they love their neighbourhood through the Neighbourhood Associations page on Shape Your City.

Nominations and stories submitted by Oct. 16 will be entered for a chance to win a $100 local prize package.

Residents are also encouraged to share Good Neighbour Day activities, photos and stories on social media using the hashtag #GoodNeighbourDayMH and tagging the City of Medicine Hat and Neighbourhood Associations of Medicine Hat & Area.

The City says it will continue exploring ways to support community activities and expand participation in Good Neighbour Day in future years.
