A suspicious package in southeast Medicine Hat was safely removed and disposed of Thursday, prompting a temporary road closure and a shelter-in-place request for nearby residents.

The Medicine Hat Police Service said emergency crews responded to the area of Southview Drive and Dunmore Road Southeast at about 10:15 a.m.

The MHPS Explosive Disposal Unit was called to the scene and rendered the package safe.

Police said people in the area may have heard a loud bang as part of the disposal operation.

Southview Drive was closed between Dunmore Road and Thompson Crescent Southeast until early Thursday afternoon while crews responded to the incident.

Residents in the immediate area of Dunmore Road and the 2700 block of Southview Drive, as well as Calder Road at Cypress Way, had been asked to shelter in place.

Fire and EMS crews cleared the scene by early afternoon, while police remained in the area to continue their investigation.
