Brooks RCMP report three weekend incidents, including rollover and dog attack

Brooks RCMP responded to several incidents over the weekend, including a rollover collision that led to an impaired driving arrest, an intoxicated man at a local restaurant and a dog attack that injured a child at Dinosaur Provincial Park.

Police say the rollover happened Sept. 27 at about 9:50 p.m. in the Steveville area, when Brooks RCMP received an automated 911 crash notification.

Officers arriving at the scene found an overturned Dodge Ram pickup truck at the side of the road.

There were no occupants inside the vehicle, but police say the rear window had been smashed and beer cans were found at the scene.

Evidence indicated the truck was travelling downhill when the driver lost control, crossed the centre line into the oncoming lane and came to rest off the roadway.

Police later identified and located the driver, who told officers they had been picked up by a passing semi-truck after the collision.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and subsequently underwent an impaired driving investigation.

Police say the driver provided a breath sample into an approved screening device that resulted in a fail.

The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle and issued an Immediate Roadside Sanction.

Because it was the driver’s second impaired driving occurrence, Mounties say the driver received a 90-day licence suspension, a 30-day vehicle seizure and a $2,000 administrative penalty.

The truck was towed from the scene.

Brooks RCMP are reminding motorists that impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk.

Police say anyone who suspects an impaired driver should call 911.

Brooks RCMP are also investigating a report of a dog attack at the Dinosaur Provincial Park campground on Sunday.

Police were called at about 2:36 p.m. after reports of a child being attacked by an off-leash dog.

The child’s mother told police her son had been riding his bicycle when the dog attacked him, biting his shoulder and pulling him from the bicycle.

The child was taken to hospital for medical assessment.

The matter has been referred to County of Newell peace officers for further investigation.

A separate incident on Saturday involved an intoxicated man at a local fast-food restaurant.

Brooks RCMP were called at about 1:51 p.m. after receiving a report of a man behaving aggressively inside the restaurant.

The man had left by the time officers arrived.

The complainant provided police with a description and the direction the man had travelled.

Officers later located him at a nearby retail store.

Police say the man showed signs of significant intoxication and was having difficulty standing.

He was arrested for public intoxication and held until he was sober, at which point he was released.
