Medicine Hat police seize $104K in cocaine, firearms in trafficking investigation

Two Medicine Hat residents are facing numerous charges after police seized more than one kilogram of cocaine, firearms and nearly 19-thousand dollars in cash from a southeast residence.

Medicine Hat Police said members of the Major Crimes Unit, assisted by patrol officers, executed a search warrant Sept. 24 at a home in the 300 block of Stratton Way SE.

Police said the search resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,042 grams of cocaine, 13.5 grams of methamphetamine and $18,689 in Canadian currency.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of about $104,000.

Investigators also seized several firearms, including a loaded 10-millimetre Glock handgun with a defaced serial number, a nine-millimetre handgun and two sawed-off shotguns.

Police said other weapons found included conducted-energy weapons, brass knuckles, knives, pepper spray and collapsible batons.

Items consistent with drug trafficking were also seized.

Forty-five-year-old Sean Bowers of Medicine Hat faces charges including possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and multiple firearms-related offences.

He also faces nine counts of breaching a firearms prohibition, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of breaching a release order.

Forty-one-year-old Ashley Barker of Medicine Hat faces similar drug trafficking and proceeds-of-crime charges, along with several firearms-related offences.

Both Bowers and Barker were remanded into custody following judicial interim release hearings.

They are scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Medicine Hat on Sept. 29.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
