Canada’s Leylah Fernandez reaches final of WTA’s Singapore Tennis Open

SINGAPORE — Canada’s Leylah Fernandez advanced to the final of the Singapore Tennis Open with a three-sets win over Maja Chwalinska of Poland on Saturday.

Fernandez of Laval, Que., prevailed 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 over the fifth-seeded Chwalinska to reach her first final this season and the ninth of her career.

Fernandez, the sixth seed, will face Australia’s Talia Gibson in Sunday’s final in the first meeting of the two women. Fernandez is ranked 31st in the world and Gibson 63rd.

“Can’t get enough of this crowd,” Fernandez wrote on her Instagram account. “Let’s do it again tomorrow!!”

Fernandez seeks her sixth career title and first since October of 2025 when she claimed the Kinoshita Group Japan Open in Osaka.

The 24-year-old was broken in her first three service games Saturday and took just one point on return as Chwalinska, a French Open finalist in June, raced to a 5-0 lead. Fernandez extended the set after breaking the Pole in the sixth game, but then lost serve to drop the first set.

Fernandez revived, however, to take a 2-0 lead in the second set. Tied 4-4, the Canadian’s backhand swinging volley broke Chwalinska, and Fernandez served out the set.

Fernandez took control in the third set when she scored back-to-back breaks for a 4-1 lead en route to victory.

Fernandez hit 31 winners to Chwalinska’s 15, but also committed 43 unforced errors to her opponent’s 28.

Gibson defeated Tatiana Prozorova of Russia in a walkover. Prozorova said she was unfairly withdrawn from the semifinal because of a doctor’s concerns about a concussion.

She was struck in the face by a ball during a doubles quarterfinal, which prompted an assessment.
