Medicine Hat Cubs win pair over Wheatland Kings to conclude preseason

In between those came six Cubs goals from six different players.

Colby Gulliver found the back of the net at 16:09 into the first period on a pass from Cole Fisher to tie the game at one.

A minute and 37 seconds later, the Cubs took a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

The Cubs built on their lead in the second period, when Jaxon Bohrn scored the eventual game-winner at the 5:07 mark. Assists went to Ryker Watson and Wryder Soveran-Welte.

Watson struck next with a goal at 12:23, assisted by Ethan Hall and Bohrn.

Josiah Jackson would put the Cubs up 5-1 with a power-play goal at the 18:40 mark. Gulliver and Fisher would get the assists.

The Cubs’ final goal came from Treyden Kleinknecht at the 2:35 mark of the third period, assisted by Collier and Gradon Goodberry.

The game had 90 penalty minutes handed out. The Cubs were 1-for-5 on the power play and killed nine penalties.

Goaltender Kayden Van Ham turned aside 15 shots to get the win for the Cubs.

On Saturday, the Cubs would jump out to a 4-0 lead through the first half of the game on goals from Lucas Dulle, Reeve Zacharias, Collier and Jacob Hazzard.

The Wheatland Kings would strike back with four of their own to tie things up by early in the third period.

Nolen Sutherland scored at the 4:51 mark to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead.

Then, Kleinknecht scored the eventual game-winner a minute and a second later, making it 6-4 Cubs.

The Kings would get a short-handed goal from Charlie Goll at 10:49.

Goaltender Hudson Corbett turned aside 19 of 24 shots in the Cubs’ win.

Friday and Saturday, the Cubs host two home games at the Kinplex 1 Arena to open the Heritage Junior Hockey League Season.

They will look to repeat as HJHL Champions after winning their first league title in 2025-26.
