UPCOMING GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

5A #2 Salisbury Sabres vs. #1 Harry Ainlay Titans 6:00 p.m., Friday, September 25, Foote Field (Edmonton)

It’s always a terrific event when these two teams get together. Dating back to the beginnings of their fierce rivalry in the 1980’s, anytime these two programs meet, you get everything you could possibly want out of a high school football game. Upsets, controversial endings, last-second victories, all in a well-played package from two schools that take football very seriously. However, this time will mark the first time they have been ranked #1 and #2 at the 5A level in the province, as they are that level of play’s only remaining undefeated teams (which says a lot about how tough that level of play is). Lots of seats at Foote Field, but I wouldn’t get there too late if you wanted a good one. This is must-see football in the Edmonton area this week. If you’re in the south, the #5 L.C.I. vs. #4 St. Francis game in Calgary on Friday is something you might want to check out as well.

4A #8 Bev Facey Falcons vs. #2 Austin O’Brien Crusaders 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 25, Millwoods Turf (Edmonton)

Another Edmonton area must-see game will feature the defending provincial 4A champion Austin O’Brien Crusaders against the up-and-coming Bev Facey Falcons. Austin O’Brien, regardless of their record, has had a standing reservation in the 4A draw for the SSA Provincials for years. And, each year, regardless of their record, they perform admirably, including last year’s championship. But this year that spot is in jeopardy. The Bev Facey Falcons have picked up their game and are a real threat to take that 4A spot in November. For this game, both teams come in from different angles. After two ties, the Crusaders had the week off last week and are well rested, while the Falcons have had to fight their way through games against the top two 5A schools in the province over the past two weeks, taking their proverbial noogies in the process. There are not a lot of seats at Millwoods Turf, so if you’re interested in this one, I would definitely show up early. A southern version of a great 4A match-up will see #3 Cochrane travel to #6 Bert Church in Airdrie on Friday night as well.
