City of Medicine Hat clarifies role in regulating provincial referendum signs

The City of Medicine Hat is reminding residents that it has a limited role in regulating provincial election and referendum signage ahead of Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum.

The city says the content, size and general location of provincial election and referendum signs are regulated by the province.

Municipal governments do not regulate the signs through local bylaws, as the Elections Act prohibits municipal councils from passing bylaws or resolutions for election signs or advertisements.

Medicine Hat says its involvement is largely limited to public safety and municipal property.
