A 49-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing five mischief charges after police say several vehicles were intentionally damaged in a southeast parking lot in Medicine Hat.

The Medicine Hat Police Service received reports around 10 a.m. on Tuesday that multiple vehicles had been damaged in the 400 block of Maple Avenue S.E.

An independent witness reported seeing a man use an object to scratch several parked vehicles and recorded part of the incident on a cellphone.

Investigators said they obtained surveillance footage of the incident and determined five vehicles had been damaged, with estimated repair costs totalling about $12,500.

Members of the MHPS Downtown Patrol Unit later located and arrested the man without incident.

He is being held pending a judicial interim release hearing.

The man faces five counts of mischief under $5,000, but police say his name can not be released at this time, as the charges have not yet been sworn before the Provincial Court of Alberta.
