Medicine Hat council to consider water protection, recreation plans at it’s meeting Tuesday

Medicine Hat City Council will consider several major initiatives on Tuesday, including a renewed focus on watershed protection and plans for future recreation facilities.

Council is being asked to reaffirm its support for protecting the city’s watershed, source water, groundwater and drinking water security.

The proposed resolution would direct administration to continue work on the city’s Water Management and Adaptation Strategy, including consideration of drought and flood resilience, stormwater quality, water quality risks and infrastructure reliability.

It would also have the mayor send a letter to provincial and federal officials calling for transparent, evidence-based assessments and consultation with downstream municipalities when decisions involving upstream activities could affect water resources.

Council will also receive an update on the Riverside Corridor Enhancement Project, including a presentation on feedback gathered through public engagement.

Another major item is the Facilities for the Future recreation renewal initiative.

Administration is recommending that council move forward with negotiations to acquire land in the city’s south end for recreation amenities and restart the preliminary design process for a south-side outdoor aquatics project.

The recommendation also calls for exploring provincial and federal funding, advancing planning work in the Brier Run area and developing a long-term framework to guide recreation facility investments and priorities.

Council will also consider first reading of a bylaw that would designate the Baker-Spalding Block at 515A North Railway Street S.E. as a municipal historic resource.

A separate recommendation would begin the process of designating the Cypress Club at 218 6 Avenue S.E. as a municipal historic resource.

Three rezoning applications are also on the agenda, involving properties at 22 Sierra Green S.W., 535 16 Street S.W. and 855 Gershaw Drive S.W.

Council will meet in closed session at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to discuss economic development, a Medicine Hat College agreement and a utility access issue.

The meeting is open to the public beginning at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
