Virtual emergency physician program expands to Oyen
Patients visiting the emergency department at Big Country Hospital in Oyen now have additional physician support through Alberta Health Services’ Virtual Emergency Physician program.
The program uses scheduled, experienced emergency department physicians to remotely support rural facilities.
Nursing staff can connect with an AHS physician by telephone or videoconference to assess patients with non-life-threatening conditions. Virtual physicians can speak with patients, work with local health-care teams, order tests and medications, and determine whether a patient can be discharged or needs to be transferred to another facility.
Beginning on Sept. 1, a virtual physician will provide overnight emergency department coverage from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., Monday through Thursday.
