Tariffs, trade costs blamed as Weddingstar prepares to close after 43 years
Weddingstar will close its Medicine Hat operation next month after 43 years in business.
Owner Rick Brink says tariffs and increasing costs tied to cross-border trade have made it too difficult to continue.
The company plans to close Sept. 25 and begin winding down its operations, including liquidating inventory and equipment. Weddingstar currently employs about 85 people.
Brink says the company has been hit particularly hard by tariffs because roughly 75 per cent of its sales are to the United States, and the majority of its products are manufactured in China.
