Corbin Mayer returns home and takes Solar Plunge after carrying Special Olympics torch across Alberta

The journey across Alberta was a long one, but Mayer said coming back to Medicine Hat gave him a renewed sense of energy.

“It was long, but refreshing when we came home to Medicine Hat,” Mayer said.

Mayer then took part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Solar Plunge at Icy Mountain Water Co., becoming one of the first people to jump into the ice-cold water.

The Solar Plunge is a summer version of the annual Polar Plunge and was organized as part of the lead-up to the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.

Mayer said he was eager to take the plunge.

“I was one of the top three to go first,” he said.

For Mayer, the support from the community made returning home even more meaningful.

“It felt awesome to have the support of Medicine Hat and just to feel like it’s Medicine Hat as it should be. It’s amazing,” Mayer said.

The torch then continued to Co-op Place for Tuesday night’s Opening Ceremony, where the Flame of Hope made its grand entrance.

Mayer said he still can’t believe the Games are finally here and is looking forward to seeing a full crowd at the ceremony.

The Solar Plunge also supports Special Olympics Alberta, with funds raised that help support the Special Olympics programming in Medicine Hat.
