ASIRT investigating after Brooks RCMP officer fatally shoots man during arrest attempt

Investigators said the man came from the back of the home, saw officers and left through a side door before running toward a nearby alley with one officer following him.

In the alley, ASIRT says the officer told the man to drop a knife he was holding.

The man then ran toward the officer, and the officer fired their gun, striking the man.

Officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived, but the man died at the scene.

Investigators later found two knives during an examination of the area.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter, which includes cases involving serious injury or death, or serious and sensitive concerns about an officer’s actions.

ASIRT will investigate the use of force by police and the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The agency says the information released reflects what investigators know at this early stage, and the investigation remains ongoing. No further details have been released.

ASIRT is an independent civilian-led agency that investigates potential criminal offences involving police officers across Alberta, including cases where police actions may have resulted in serious injury or death.
