The Medicine Hat Mavericks dropped a close 11-10 contest to the Swift Current 57s on Monday night at Athletic Park.

It was a back-and-forth game where the Mavs fell short at the end.

Medicine Hat took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Evan Morrison hit a triple to start the inning, before Blake Dale hit into a groundout and drove Morrison home to make it 1-0 Mavs.

The 57s would take the lead in the top of the third inning with a pair of runs. With two outs, Keagan Knowler would be walked, and Hudson Unger would hit a single, then Malachi Jaramillo would get hit by a pitch to load the bases. A throwing error would then allow Zach Clow to reach and Knowler and Unger to score.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Mavs would strike back for four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The inning started with Jamel Chabot being hit by a pitch. He would steal second base before advancing to third off a Josh Stark single. Morrison would then hit a single to score Chabot and advance Stark to third.

That would chase the 57s starter, Riley Bestor, from the game and bring Ian Rasmussen to the mound. Dale would draw a walk to load the bases. Frankie Giacalone would then hit a double to bring home both Stark and Morrison. A few batters later, Dale would score on a Nick Hill ground out.

The 57s would tie the game back up at five with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. After a leadoff walk to Zach Clow, Jake Roggensack would single. Both would come in to score on an Anthony Hector triple. A Jude Pacheco bunt single would bring Hector home.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mavs would regain the lead with a pair of runs. Morrison would lead off with a single, and he would come home on a Dale triple. Giacalone would hit a single and drive in Dale to make it 7-5 Mavs.

That lead would fall apart at the top of the eighth inning. Singles from Pacheco and Lucas Geisler started things off. Jake Hiromoto would single to drive home Pacheco. Kegan Knowler would then walk to load the bases. Adam Vulcano was then replaced on the Mavs’ mound by Levi Tibbetts.

He would strike out a batter before giving up a two-run single to Hunter Fujimoto. After another strikeout, he gave up a single to Roggensack to drive in pinch runner Cohen Jorgenson. A Hector double would score both Fujimoto and Roggensack.

The Mavs trailed 11-7 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Things would start with Carson Chan reaching on a passed ball after striking out. Chabot would then get hit by a pitch.

Stark followed that with a double that scored Chan, and had Chabot and himself both come home on errors.

That was as close as the Mavericks would get, as the ninth went scoreless.

Chase Cummins would earn the win for the 57s, with Adam Vulcano taking the loss for the Mavs. Zachary Desylva got the save, closing things down in the ninth for Swift Current.

The Mavs still hold a 4-2 edge in the season series between the two teams.

On Tuesday, Medicine Hat hosts a pair of games against two different teams.

The Sylvan Lake Gulls are at Athletic Park for a 1 p.m. start to make up for a game rescheduled from June 28 due to weather.

The Gulls won a close 5-4 game between the teams in their only other meeting of the season on June 27.

In the evening, the Weyburn Beavers will take on the Mavericks at 6:45 p.m.

The Mavs hold a 4-1 edge in the season series, having won the last three games against the Beavers.
