Medicine Hat Mavericks split weekend games with Red Sox, take of 57s on Monday

The Medicine Hat Mavericks host the Swift Current 57s at Athletic Park on Monday night as they continue their homestand. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m.

Heading into the contest, the Mavs have a 16-19 record, sitting third in the Western Canadian Baseball League‘s East Division. The 57s are 11-22 and are at the bottom of the East Division.

In five contests between the two teams this season, the Mavs hold a 4-1 edge.

Over the weekend, the Mavs split a pair of contests with the Regina Red Sox. Saturday was an 11-8 loss, and Friday was a 10-6 win.

The Mavs’ Saturday game was the annual superhero night in support of #dominicstrong, raising money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and included the team wearing Superman-themed hats.

Both teams showed their power with a total of nine home runs in the contest.

The villains got off to a strong start in the first inning with Ian Montz crushing a two-run homer to open the scoring for the Red Sox.

In the bottom of the second, the Mavs would strike back. Nick Hill went deep this time with a solo shot to narrow the deficit to 2-1.

The Mavs’ offence would keep going in the bottom of the third inning. Jahzeel Groetelaers would start the inning off by reaching on a fielding error. He later scored on a Blake Dale single to tie the game at two.

A Frankie Giacalone sacrifice fly would give the Mavs a 3-2 lead, with Josh Stark coming in to score. Nick Hill would then drive in both Dale and Carter Roth to give the Mavs a 5-2 lead.

The lead would be short-lived as the Red Sox had an offensive outburst in the top of the fourth. The five-run inning included a three-run homer from Cooper Jones and a two-run shot from Jalen Meyers. Giving the Red Sox a 7-5 lead.

Medicine Hat would tie things back up at seven in the bottom of the fifth. An Evan Morrison solo home run was followed by one from Dale.

The long ball continued in the top of the sixth inning for the Red Sox as Justin Simard went deep to bring the Red Sox ahead 8-7.

In the top of the eighth, the Red Sox would expand the lead to 9-7, before making it 11-7 with a two-run homer from Will Togher in the top of the ninth.

A Carson Chan home run for the Mavs in the bottom of the ninth was as close as they would come to getting back in the contest.

Beck Button took the loss for the Mavs, with Garrett Mullins earning the win for the Red Sox. Vittorio Iacobucci was credited with the save.

On Friday night, there were also five home runs hit between the two teams.

The Mavs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Morrison would score on a Giacalone ground out, and Dale would score on a Roth double.

A Togher two-run home run would even things up for the Red Sox in the top of the fourth inning.

The bats would remain relatively quiet until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Mavs would score seven.

Hill would start the inning off with a single up the middle, followed by walks drawn by both Johnny Vulcano and Eric Calder to load the bases.

Hill would come in to score as Jamel Chabot was hit by a pitch from Quinn Boreen, who came in at the start of the inning.

With the score now 3-2 Mavs, Adam Vulcano hit a single to score his brother, Johnny, to make it 4-2 Mavs.

That would be the end of the night for Boreen, who failed to get an out with five batters faced.

Colton Banks would walk the first batter he faced in Morrison to score Calder.

Two batters later, Giacalone would hit a grand slam to make it 9-2 Mavs.

The Red Sox would get four runs back in the top of the eighth inning. Three of the runs came from an Ian Montz home run.

With the score now 9-6 Mavs, Roth would hit a double to drive in Blake in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-6.

Levi Tibbets would come into the game in the ninth inning and close things out with three straight outs.

Derek Archer got the win for the Mavs. He threw 91 pitches before being pulled after a pair of batters in the eighth inning for JJ Harnett.

Boreen would take the loss for the Red Sox.

After the game on Monday against the 57s, the Mavs will host a pair of games on Tuesday. They will take on the Sylvan Lake Gulls at 1 p.m. before hosting the Weyburn Beavers at 6:45 p.m to conclude six straight home games.
