$4.6 billion capital investment

Final investment announcement for the Greenlight Electricity Centre

Jul 2, 2026 | 5:01 PM

Pembina Pipeline, Kineticor Asset Management and Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners – partners in the Greenlight Electricity Centre Limited Partnership – announced Thursday their final investment decision for the Greenlight Electricity Centre.

The natural gas-powered electricity facility is approved to supply 932 megawatts to a potential new data centre in Sturgeon County, according to a provincial government news release.

It’s estimated the $4.6 billion capital investment will support about 1,000 good-paying construction jobs and 30 long-term skilled positions. When operational, the province adds, the facility will also result in millions in royalties to the province from the natural gas used to power it.

“Alberta is primed for even more investments of this magnitude, and this didn’t happen by chance. This project is an example of what is possible under the landmark energy agreement signed between Alberta and the federal government in the fall of 2025,” says a joint statement issued by Premier Danielle Smith, Minister of Affordability and Utilities RJ Sigurdson, and Minister of Technology and Innovation Nate Glubish.

“By getting the federal government to agree to remove the Clean Electricity Regulations that were hurting investment in dispatchable, baseload power generation in our province, we have opened the doors for more projects like this. The agreement will allow Alberta to increase oil and gas production, secure more energy projects, and attract billions of dollars in investment that grow and diversify our economy for years to come.’

The province also noted that Alberta’s ‘Bring Your Own Power’ model for AI Data centre projects is designed to protect the reliability and affordability of electricity that Albertans depend on.

“By having data centres bring their own generation and pay for related power infrastructure, this framework ensures that projects like this one will actually reduce transmission costs on Alberta’s utility bills,” the statement added.
