Medicine Hat comedian performing at UK’s longest running festival

Medicine Hat’s Josh Haskett will be performing his stand-up comedy routine in the United Kingdom from Feb. 13 to 15 at the renowned Leicester Comedy Festival.

He will be performing six shows, including two that he himself will be the headlining act for.

Referring to himself as ‘The Funny 4 Footer’, he will bring his unique perspective to Europe’s largest and longest running comedy festival, that spans three weeks.

Haskett said that, as a person who is four feet and three inches tall, he doesn’t think it’s okay to make fun of people with disabilities.

However, he wants to provide comedy that people can see from his perspective through.

“I see a lot of different things from a different perspective, and being able to share that among an audience is a lot of fun,” he said.

Haskett began his stand-up journey six years ago at Medicine Hat’s Mad Hatter Comedy Club.

He said that his upcoming back surgeries influenced his decision to take a shot at an international comedy festival, something he hasn’t done before.

“Last summer, I found out that I had to have three more back surgeries. I’ve already had three,” he said.

“I thought about the timeline, and I said, ‘What do I want to do before I have these three major back surgeries?'” he added.

“I talked to a couple of comics who are not only great comics, but great people. I told them about this grandiose idea that I had about applying to this comedy festival.”

Haskett told comics Charles Andrew Payne from Calgary and Matt Santos from Ottawa about his idea.

Haskett designed a poster of the three of them for a ‘Two and a Half Men’ comedy trio show, and the submission to the festival was accepted quickly.

Haskett said that he’s very excited to do Canada proud, and represent his own country in a different one overseas.

He said his participation will not only highlight his growing success, but put a spotlight on the active stand-up comedy scene in Medicine Hat as well.

“Medicine Hat’s got a really cool comedy scene, and I know not a lot of people know about it,” he said.

“Whenever there’s stand-up comedy, whether it’s at Mad Hatters or at other venues in town, do yourself a favor, go out, watch those comics, and have a laugh,” he added.

“We live in a weird place right now in the world, and a little bit of laughter isn’t a bad thing.”
