The City of Medicine Hat’s chief financial officer Dennis Egert is exiting his role, CHAT News has learned.

Four independent sources, each speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed his departure on Friday.

It was not immediately clear why or how he left the role. A source with direct knowledge was unable to share further details.

Dennis Egert, who also served as managing director of corporate services, first started at the city in August 2014, according to his LinkedIn work history.

Egert was one of the four managing directors that each preside over city hall divisions.

A call to a public phone number affiliated with Egert was answered by another employee.

A spokesperson said Friday afternoon the city does not comment on the employment status of individuals, as is standard practice.

Egert’s departure comes amid a tumultuous year for city hall spurred by a conflict between the mayor and chief administrator Ann Mitchell centred around the division of authority between staff and council.

The city’s has come under pressure from residents and businesses concerned by property tax rate increases, poor communication and, most recently, its approach to The Mustard Seed shelter.

Egert’s departure would mark the latest in a string of senior staff turnovers over the current term of council.

In July 2024, then-City Clerk Larry Randle quit, in part, because of the way he was treated by members of the public.

Former city manager Bob Nicolay left Medicine Hat in 2022 for the same role in Grande Prairie. Two interim CAOs filled the gap until Mitchell was hired in 2023.

Invest Medicine Hat’s Erik Van Enk left the city in 2022, as well.
