National bronze medal for Medicine Hat ball hockey team

An adult ball hockey team from Medicine Hat won a medal at nationals for the first time this weekend.

The Medicine Hat Outlaws competed in Edmonton throughout last week, wrapping things up with the bronze medal finish.

The Outlaws finished second in the round robin competition, giving them a first round bye.

After losing their semi-final match 6-4 to the Kitchener Fury, the Outlaws faced the Tri-City Knights team from B-C for bronze.

A team the Outlaws had dropped a 4-3 decision to in the final game of the round robin.

After starting the bronze game down 1-0, the Outlaws made easy work of the Knights the rest of the way, winning 8-1 by a mercy rule prior to the end of the third period.

Ben Feere, helped manage and played with the Outlaws during the tournament and says he’s incredibly proud of how they battled through the gruelling tournament.

“We get a chance to play a little bit rougher and a little bit tougher than we do in the league here,” Feere said.

“Having to play six games over the course of five days is pretty difficult, and so really proud of just how everybody dug in and was able to come away with some hardware. That’s pretty neat for a lot of guys being their first nationals experience.”

The Medicine Hat Outlaws are a member of the Medicine Hat Ball Hockey Association and had finished second at provincial last year to qualify for Mens’ B Nationals this year.
