The departure of Medicine Hat’s former city clerk Larry Randle was announced by an official for the first time on Monday during a public council meeting.

CHAT News reported he was leaving the role on Saturday after weeks of speculation and confirmed on Monday his replacement would be Cypress County CAO Tarolyn Aaserud.

Coun. Ramona Robins, who was chairing the meeting Monday, hailed Randle as a “real gentleman”.

“He was always so thoughtful and carefully thought of the advice of even parliamentary procedure and was just such a pleasure to work with him,” Robins said.

“I hope he goes off to many great adventures,” she added.

Robins did not explain why Randle left and there was no indication there would be any future public explanation.

The source that spoke to CHAT News on the condition of anonymity about Randle’s departure said he quit the role because of “abuse” he received from members of the public, in particular harassment from the “Community TV Trash Panda” group.

After the meeting, Coun. Allison Knodel said Randle was “a gem” during his time working with council and the city.

“He was a kind-hearted, sincere, thoughtful and caring clerk, and I was very lucky to sit next to him,” Knodel added.

“He’ll be missed.”
