Medicine Hat’s pound runs out of room for dogs

The Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre in Medicine Hat has run out of space for dogs.

The pound, known as APARC, is now at capacity and is essentially unable to take on new canines.

APARC reached this point as they ran out of space in the last two weeks, general manager Steven Wolf said.

“We have a set number of kennels and we have dogs for pretty much all of those kennels,” Wolf said.

“At this point, all we can do is manage the amount of dogs coming in.”

APARC is requesting the public to make appointments before dropping a dog off.

Wolf added the community can do its part by rehoming pets themselves to avoid bringing more dogs to the pound.

He said the pound hopes to avoid putting dogs down.

“We are going to try to avoid euthanizing for space if at all possible,” Wolf said.

“However, if a dog has behavioral issues or has some sort of quality of life issue, then, working along with the vets, we will euthanize the pet.”
