Inaugural theatre class performs final play at Seven Persons school

Jun 6, 2024 | 11:15 AM

Avery Emerson got involved in the Fine Arts Academy at Seven Persons School in Grade 3 when it first launched.

Now, she’s about to perform her final play in her last year of the program.

“I’m really excited for this role because I’m one of the main characters this year and this is the most lines I’ve ever had,” Emerson said.

Emerson and 35 other students in the theatre program have spent endless hours practicing at least once a week since January.

For many of the participants, it’s what they look forward to the most.

The play will run at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

“Thursday is the thing that gets me through the rest of the week,” Gage Anderson said.

Anderson got involved in the program after watching the academy’s inaugural play when he was in Grade 4.

He participated in last year’s play, allowing him to take on a leadership role this year.

“There’s just so many new people that have joined, and they’re so new to it,” Anderson said.

“I get to kind of be, ‘this is how you do it.'”

Emerson and Anderson are both performing in a one-time public showing of It’s A Madhouse at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Seven Persons School gymnasium. Tickets are $5 at the door.

While Seven Persons is known for its athletic prowess, play director and Fine Arts Academy teacher Rebecca Drew said the program is offers something different for its participants.

“This gives a little piece to the kids that maybe aren’t so athletic,” Drew said.

“And they get to experience something that’s more unique to them and their personality.”

Emerson is determined to keep working on her craft.

“I’m probably going to try Medicine Hat Theatre out to see if I can go more with my acting,” she said.
