Medicine Hat Transit seeks input on the future of its special transit services

Jun 5, 2024 | 10:15 AM

The City of Medicine Hat is seeking community input for an upcoming review of its Special Transit service.

Special Transit is a specialized alternative transportation service utilizing smaller buses for people with disabilities who qualify through a functional assessment and have registered with the city.

The review will consider industry best practices and identify program gaps and improvement opportunities, including customer service, service delivery and other community expectations, the city said.

All aspects of the Special Transit services will be reviewed, and recommendations for improvement will be made through a proposed implementation plan and an updated service policy.

There’s two ways to give feedback.

Input can be provided through a new online community survey until June 30.

There will also be an in-person engagement session running from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 19 at the Unison at Veiner Centre. Special Transit service will be available for attendees free of charge, the city said.

The city will receive input from transit drivers and local organizations in separate feedback sessions.

Gord Dykstra, manager of Medicine Hat Transit Services, said community input is important to crafting next steps.

“We value our community’s feedback and believe it’s crucial in shaping the future of our Special Transit service,” Dykstra said in a statement.

“By participating in this review, residents can help us make decisions based on community priorities, enhance service delivery and meet the evolving needs of our community.”
