Alberta kicks off Seniors’ Week with $18 million funding announcement

Alberta is providing funding for senior support in recognition of Seniors’ Week.

The Alberta government on Monday proclaimed the week as Seniors’ Week, which they say is an opportunity to celebrate their invaluable contributions to the province.

As part of the week, the province is providing $18 million in funding over three years, which will go towards both new and existing initiatives such as home support and outreach services.

Alberta seniors minister Jason Nixon said the money is critical to supporting the independence of seniors as they age.

“Our government is committed to supporting seniors in living and aging independently in their communities, which is why this funding is so important,” Nixon said in a statement.

The total funding from Alberta’s government includes $12 million allocated to organizations covering the entire province, such as the Carya in Calgary and the Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council.

In addition, $6 million over three years will be allocated to the United Way of Calgary and Area on behalf of Healthy Aging Alberta to expand in-home, non-medical support services.

Alberta reported that the province has a senior population of 790,000 and increased by about 2,500 each month in 2023.
