‘Able to use our speed and size’: Medicine Hat High School wins Bobcat Bowl

Hat High’s senior boys’ basketball team extended its overall record to 17-1 by winning the Legendary Bobcat Bowl, which was hosted by Bishop O’Byrne and All Saints last weekend in Calgary.

The journey began with Hat High overpowering Holy Trinity with a resounding 80-52 victory in the opening match. Kyle Bertram led the charge with 16 points, while Trey Watson contributed 15, setting the tone for Hat High’s dominance.

The quarterfinals saw Hat High facing off against the formidable Bishop McNally from Calgary.

Coach Watson said McNally is a physical team.

“McNally is a very physical team that uses their size and aggressiveness to win ball games. We were able to use our speed and size to survive a very physical game.”

Hat High emerged triumphant with an 83-71 victory, with Arinze Aniagu’s impressive performance of 25 points and 13 rebounds leading the way and Ashraf Ismail adding 15 points.

In the semi-finals, Hat High faced the host school, All Saints, and exhibited their prowess by securing an 83-40 victory.

Trey Watson and Arinze Aniagu each contributed 16 points, showcasing the team’s balanced and potent offensive strategy.

Hat High then went head-to-head against the #8 4A team in the province, the powerhouse Sir Winston Churchill for the gold medal. Hat High implemented a relentless press, propelling them to an 83-63 victory. Jada Bolok’s outstanding 24-point performance and Arinze Aniagu’s 19 points secured the championship title for Hat High.

The individual accolades doled out were just as impressive. Jada Bolok was named MVP of the tournament, a testament to his stellar contributions. Additionally, Arinze Aniagu received recognition as a tournament all-star. Trey Watson earned the Calgary Surge MVP award from the professional basketball team in the CEBL, underscoring his exceptional success at the Legendary Bobcat Bowl.

Hat High’s senior boys and girls will travel to Raymond on Tuesday night to take on the #2 (boys) and #1 (girls) team in the province, the Raymond Comets. This will be ASAA’s game of the week and will be on Telus Optik TV channel 1985 and Raymond Comets Youtube channel. Girls play at 6:00 pm and boys at 7:45 pm
