Proper ventilation is key, according to Duane Plato.

‘Do you want 10 years or 25 out of your roof?’: Raising the alarm on ceiling condensation concerns

Medicine Hat’s cold snap is gone with warm weather forecasted for at least the next week but those temperature changes could lead to condensation issues.

The water flowing could mean bad news for homeowners.

Most attics tend to have insufficient air flow due to improper insulation installation, which can lead to moisture build up.

Condensation issues are cumulative over many years according to Duane Plato, president of Plato’s Superior Roofing.

“The water can build up and damage drywalls. I’ve seen blocks of ice in the attic because of improper air circulation,” Plato told CHAT News.

Plato said the best solution is to stay ahead of the issue.

“Every year, troughs should be cleaned out.” Plato said.

“You’d be surprised on how much leaves, branches and dirt get into that trough. What happens is you get rain or iced up snow, it backs up eaves which can cause a little of damage over time,” he added.

“Making sure your overhangs have proper ventilation is important. Do you want 10 or 25 years out of your roof?”

Condensation damage can also be caused by running your fan after showers, and Plato suggests turning fans off when finished.

Roof replacement caused by water damage can be expensive, averaging $3 per square foot, but can cost as much as $10 per square foot.
