Submissions open for 2024 Michener journalism fellowships

Jan 18, 2024 | 9:59 AM

Submissions are now open for the 2024 Michener Fellowships.

The fellowships are offered by The Michener Awards Foundation in partnership with the Rideau Hall Foundation. One is in support of investigative reporting, and the other is dedicated to the enrichment of journalism education. Each is worth $40,000, plus $5,000 for expenses.

The Michener Awards Foundation is so named after Canada’s 20th Governor General (1967-1974), the late Right Honourable Roland Michener (1900-1991), who was born in what is now Lacombe, Alberta.

Michener himself founded the original Michener journalism awards, with the first given out in 1971. Fellowships began to be offered in 1987.

The Michener name is well-known in Red Deer, used for one of the city’s neighbourhoods, as well as a pool and recreation centre. Roland Michener House, his former home, is a well-known historic site in his hometown of Lacombe, and his name can be found in many other places across Canada.
