Alberta investigators are asking the public for any information related to an officer-involved shooting in Fort McMurray earlier this month.

An RCMP Wood Buffalo detachment officer fired his gun Jan. 11 after an altercation with the driver of a crashed car.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, known as ASIRT, is investigating the officer’s use of force.

ASIRT on Thursday said it is asking anyone who may have witnessed these events or has video to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.

The RCMP officer located the vehicle around 9 a.m. at the Highway 63 exit to Confederation Way.

The vehicle was suspected of being involved in a recent hit-and-run collision. The officer confirmed the vehicle he found was the stolen car.

The vehicle was stuck in deep snow, down a sloped embankment off the highway, authorities said.

The officer approached the vehicle on foot and an altercation with the driver occurred, resulting in the officer discharging his service pistol, police said.

An ambulance took the driver of the vehicle to the hospital with a gunshot injury to the lower leg.

Police recovered a black handgun from the involved vehicle when they pulled out the driver.

It was later determined to be a CO2-powered Glock replica air pistol.
