Former Cypress county councillor Alfred Belyea died due to stab wounds, the court heard from the Crown’s final witness on the sixth day of Deborah Belyea’s murder trial.

Medical examiner Andrea Nistor said the body of Alfred had four wounds in the chest and three on his neck. Some of those injuries were deep stabs while others were slashes, Nistor said.

Four of the stab wounds could have been fatal but Nistor could not narrow down the order in which Alfred was stabbed.

Some of the other injuries occurred after Alfred died, Nistor said.

Alfred’s body was found wrapped in plastic bags and blankets in a gray garbage bin at a rural property in Piapot, Sask. after he was reported missing after Thanksgiving weekend 2021.

Nistor was the prosecution’s final witness, bringing an end to the Crown’s case that Belyea committed second-degree murder against her husband.

The defense, initially slated to begin its case following a lunch break and after asking for extra time, decided to delay until court resumes Tuesday morning.
