Alberta canola industry gathering in Grande Prairie January 24 and 25

Jan 15, 2024 | 8:00 AM

People in the Alberta canola industry will be gathering in Grande Prairie later this month.

Alberta Canola will be holding its conference, annual general meeting and Research Symposium January 24 and 25.

Alberta Canola’s Rick Taillieu says this will be the second time this event has been held outside of Edmonton.

“The Peace River region represents almost 25 per cent of the canola production in Alberta, so we want to make sure we give lots of time and attention to our friends in the Peace Country.”

Taillieu says Day 1 will start with presentations from policy people with the organization.

“One of the things we have our eye on right now is changes in land use policy and the introduction of solar industrial installations on high-quality farmland.”

He adds the day will also include Alberta Canola’s 34th annual general meeting, which producers can also attend online.

The afternoon of Day 1 will feature speakers on topics like farm management and promoting canola to consumers.

The Research Symposium is set for the morning of Day 2.

Taillieu says it will include some researchers talking about the work they are doing.

“After we spend an hour with the panel like that, then we turn the attention to the audience and what we really want to find out and make sure is is our research program meeting the needs of growers in the Peace River region?”

“We’re really open to ideas and suggestions and helping them make sure that when Alberta Canola funds the research that we do, that we’re making sure that all of our areas are addressed.”

There is also a banquet on the 24th where there will be tributes to 30 years of Peace Region farmers working with Alberta Canola and a salute to Sexsmith’s Walter Paszkowski for his work in agriculture and his contributions to the organization.

People are asked to register for the event in advance. There is no cost to attend.
