‘We’d have to adjust our traffic safety plan’: Medicine Hat police say photo radar is just one piece of traffic safety

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service would need to adjust its approach to traffic safety if photo radar sites are removed from the city in the future, a spokesperson for the service told CHAT News on Thursday.

“If we saw a reduction in photo radar, we’d have to adjust our traffic safety plan,” Insp. Joe West said.

West pointed out the photo radar system that has been present in Alberta for decades is only one piece of the police service’s traffic safety plan.

“We think it does impact traffic safety and we think it does impact the driver behaviour,” he added.

The Alberta government last week said it was working over the next year to review and remove photo radar sites with high ticket to accident ratios known as “fishing holes”.

West denied there were any so-called fishing holes in Medicine Hat.

“I can only speak for our community…each one of our sites is audited through a provincial process and all of our 75 sites are in compliance with government regulations,” West said.
