Help make Christmas brighter for families fleeing domestic violence

Nov 16, 2023 | 11:27 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–Hatters are being encouraged to help make the holidays merry and bright for those fleeing family violence in our city.

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is kicking of the annual Christmas Hamper Program.

Many people arrive at the shelter with little more than the clothing on their backs. The program was started more than 22 years ago to ensure parents didn’t have to worry about not being able to put presents under the tree for their children.

Since then, 1,821 adults and 3,085 children have received support. As part of the program, parents are provided the opportunity to select the gifts their child will receive. Each adult will also receive a gift package. “Christmas should be a time of joy, but this often isn’t the reality for those experiencing family violence,” said Natasha Carvalho, executive director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.

To support the MHWSS Christmas Hamper Program, community members are invited to drop off donations of new toys and gifts (for all ages) or gift cards at Sun Valley Honda and Davis GMC Buick from November 14th until December 20th.

Financial donations are also appreciated, and can be made online at www.mhwss.ca or e-transfer to info@mhwss.ca or mailing a cheque payable to: Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society. Box 2500, Medicine Hat, AB T1A 8G8.
