Help make Christmas brighter for families fleeing domestic violence
Medicine Hat, AB–Hatters are being encouraged to help make the holidays merry and bright for those fleeing family violence in our city.
The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is kicking of the annual Christmas Hamper Program.
Many people arrive at the shelter with little more than the clothing on their backs. The program was started more than 22 years ago to ensure parents didn’t have to worry about not being able to put presents under the tree for their children.
Since then, 1,821 adults and 3,085 children have received support. As part of the program, parents are provided the opportunity to select the gifts their child will receive. Each adult will also receive a gift package. “Christmas should be a time of joy, but this often isn’t the reality for those experiencing family violence,” said Natasha Carvalho, executive director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.
