MEDICINE HAT, AB – Remembrance Day is on Saturday, marking a day to remember and honour Canadian soldiers who have lost their lives, served, or are currently serving our country.

Today, the Kiwanis club honored the approach of Remembrance Day with a presentation by Eldon Wells and Col. Doug Heine, retired South Alberta Light Horse members.

Newly appointed Commanding Officer of the Army Cadet Corps, Captain Trevor Eichelbaum, was also in attendance.

“In the Canadian Armed Forces, we would regard Remembrance Day as the most important day of the year,” says Eichelbaum. “This is a day where we can remember those who have fallen, as well as those who have come back and never been the same. Those people who went to war sacrificed everything, in some cases, for our freedom and we live in this society because of that.”

In the past few years Eichelbaum, Wells and Heine have observed a growing community backing for Remembrance Day gatherings, which they attribute to awareness of world conflicts and wars.

“This year we’ve actually found it quite incredible, the donations that we’ve been receiving for the Legion for poppies and things of the sort,” explains Eichelbaum. “So it’s been a very generous year.”

“War is around us now, and I think people are realizing that the importance of our armed forces,” says Heine.

The largest Medicine Hat Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at the Esplanade on Saturday.

Wells and Heine will extend their Remembrance Day presentation to senior homes and to those who can’t attend the Esplanade event.

The Esplanade Doors will open at 8:30am, followed by a parade to the Cenotaph in Riverside Veterans Memorial Park.
