McCoy baseball looking strong as JV and Varsity teams prepare for playoffs

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The McCoy JV Colts have proven themselves to be a team not to be messed with on the diamond. The JV Colts recently ended their regular season finishing 7-1 and sending them to the Tier 1 playoffs in Okotoks.

Coach Chad Frey is in his first season coaching the Colts and say that he had been impressed with how his team plays hard right up to the final out. He notes that his team has been excelling in coming from behind to win games showing that there is no quit in this young group of men. Frey says that his team is one of the youngest in the region with players ranging from eighth to eleventh grade. They are also the only junior varsity team in the tournament, the rest being varsity teams, giving the JV Colts a unique opportunity to win a varsity tournament with a roster made up of mostly eighth and ninth grade students.

Frey says that he wants his team to focus on the basics heading into playoffs.

“Well, first off, usually in championships, we usually want to focus on the fundamentals. Pitching is going to be a big aspect and we are going to ask our pitchers to throw strikes, work ahead in the count, obviously keep the hitters off balance if possible. We will want to play fundamental defense and be ready for the ball and be able to execute those sort of routine plays,” Frey stated Wednesday.

McCoy will be battling Foothills Composite High School and Holy Trinity Academy from Okotoks, Notre Dame from Medicine Hat as well as a team from Wilcox, Saskatchewan. The tournament begins Thursday, however, the JV Colts’ first game is on Friday.

Meanwhile, the McCoy Varsity Colts are also looking to go deep in a playoff run as their playoffs start Wednesday, May 31. Coach Cole Schreiber says that his team had its ups and downs but overall was pleased with how his team performed. Schreiber states that his team needs to make sure that they don’t let their foot off the gas at any point during their games.

“We just got to be mentally sharp come playoff time. I think that we know what we have to do, it’s just maintaining that through the full seven innings. We’re a good team, we got a great group of players, but it’s easy to take an inning off here or there, especially when we play the good teams, we just can’t afford to do that,” Schreiber said Thursday.

The 3rd-place Varsity Colts will host the 6th place team (TBD) on Wednesday at Jeffries Field in a winner-moves-on game.
