United Way donation will lower cost of YMCA summer camps

MEDICINE HAT, AB — With the end of the school year looming next month, parents are starting to think about childcare options for the summer months.

The YMCA of Medicine Hat will be offering Community Camps again this summer, and the United Way is helping make them more affordable for parents.

A $30,000 award from the United Way will be used by the Y to offset the cost of these licensed summer day camps.

That brings the weekly cost of a summer camp down to $120, and eligible families will also be able to apply for further assistance through the Alberta Child Care Subsidy.

Sharon Hayward, the CEO of the YMCA in Medicine Hat, says their summer camps have a wide variety of themes each week.

“We try to keep it interesting for the kids, so it’s also based on our national YMCA curriculum which is designed for school aged kids. While we do that we incorporate all sorts of fun themes to help the kids have fun and build some skills while they’re at camp,” says Hayward.

Some of the themes this year are titled Back to the Future, Mad Scientists, Career Camp and Team Building.

Registration for the nine programs is open now. They begin July 3 and run to the end of August.
