MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service is extending condolences after two Edmonton police officers were killed early on Thursday morning.

In a statement, MHPS says the deaths of Const. Brett Ryan and Const. Travis Jordan of the Edmonton Police Service are a stark reminder of the dangers all police officers face when serving and protecting their community and to never forget their sacrifice.

Police Chief Alan Murphy offered his condolences on Thursday afternoon.

“Things like this should never get normal and they should never make sense to anybody and I hope that never happens. This is not normal and it’s serious and I hope that never becomes something that we take for granted because it’s a sad thing that happened. Personally myself and all the members of the Medicine Hat Police Service our hearts go out to the members up in Edmonton, terrible tragedy to happen so our hearts go out to them,” said Murphy.

Police services across the country have been expressing their condolences.

The incident happened in the central Edmonton neighbourhood of Inglewood just after 1 a.m. when the officers were responding to a call about a domestic dispute.

Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee says Jordan, 35, and Ryan, 30, were shot by a man when they arrived and did not have the chance to use their guns.

He says other officers rushed the two wounded officers to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

McFee says it’s believed the suspect died of self-inflicted wounds.
