Justin Wright puts name in for Cypress-Medicine Hat UCP nomination

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The latest candidate to announce they want to represent the United Conservative Party in Cypress-Medicine Hat is centreing his campaign on one word – change

Local business owner Justin Wright says he spent nearly a year gathering feedback and consulting with family, friends and community stakeholders before making his decision in January.

He says there is a long-standing need to change the representation and the way the region is presented, moving away from the mindset of the forgotten corner and rebuilding relationships to put constituents first.

“We have got to really start putting forward what’s the best interests for our constituents whether we’re talking infrastructure projects like finally getting Highway No. 3 twinned which Danielle’s been doing a really good job working on,” says Wright.

“I also believe that Highway 41 South needs to be something that’s looked at as well as a long-term project Highway 41 North. “Projects like the Meridan Dam are another great infrastructure project that can bring a lot of long-standing payoff for the investment for the constituents of our region.”

Behind change in representation and building infrastructure, continued investment in mental health initiatives in the area is the topic Wright says he hears about most.

He’d like to see more support for smaller more local groups that aid the system.

“A great call out to that would be something like Our Collective Journey, which has done a phenomenal job really filling in the gap,” he says. Groups like that build relationships quickly, he says, a key aspect when mental health issues arise.

Wright is an entrepreneur with 15 years of experience in management and business development. His Fryer Tuck’s food truck has grown from a single unit to eight brick-and-mortar locations at area concessions, two mobile units and a catering operation.

He’s built relationships through them and through volunteerism with local non-for-profits and coaching.

“Getting out there, being part of the community and really engaging in the community I feel that I’ve really captured a lot of the concerns and voices that people have got here in Cypress-Medicine-Hat,” he says.

The party deadline for nomination applications is Feb. 9. The date for the nomination contest has not yet been announced.

James Finkbeiner has also said he intends to run for the nomination.

After announcing in December that he would seek the nomination, Robin Kurpjuweit said on Tuesday he had decided against that, citing family considerations.
