MEDICINE HAT, AB – The nomination contest for the United Conservative Party in Cypress-Medicine Hat has lost one member.

Robin Kurpjuweit has decided to pull out of the race, saying he wants to focus more on his family.

As many of you know, our family loves pretty intensly (sic).. in the past few years we have loved and let go of a lot of little ones through fostering, we have taken on new family through adoption… and through Covid, like many people, seen loved ones lost and a crushing mental health crisis sweep through our communities,” Kurpjuweit writes in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “We tackled fostering and adopting as a family. We’ve laughed together, and cried together… and we will overcome together.”

Kurpjuweit was elected to a second term on Cypress County Council in October 2021 and says he will continue in that role. He also says he will resume his role with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, of which he was elected chair of the Rural Caucus in October 2021.

James Finkbeiner announced in November he would run for the nomination and Justin Wright has signalled on his Facebook page his intention to run for the nomination. Current MLA Drew Barnes decided last week not to rejoin his former party and seek the nomination.
