ATA hosting local education roundtable this month

MEDICINE HAT, AB – An opportunity to have your voice heard on the future of education in Alberta is coming to Medicine Hat this month.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association will host a public education round-table discussion at the Medicine Hat Lodge on Jan. 26.

“There’s been a lot of changes in education, there’s been a lot of changes in society, and we want to know what our parents think in terms of where their education for their children should go,” says Heather McCaig, a Crescent Heights High School teacher and the ATA southeastern Alberta district rep.

“Our business people, where do they see needs coming out of school, what do they want to see the kids have when they graduate? You know, what does our society think? If you don’t fit into one of those two categories what do you think our society needs in terms of our kids getting an education in schools and where is that going to go when they’re done.”

McCaig says the discussions will happen in small groups around tables, so no one needs to be worried about speaking in front of a large crowd.

She says they want to hear from everyone and anyone in society and their wide array of opinions, from business owners to industry workers.

“What do we want for our education to get the people we want to build Alberta in the future,” says McCaig.

Roundtables have been happening across the province this month and the ATA will produce a report in late February or early March.

You must pre-register if you want to attend the roundtable at standforeducation.ca. Check-in starts at 6:30 p.m. with discussions starting at 7 p.m.
