MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Fire Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to raise awareness for Fire Prevention Week and is back to making presentations in local schools.

“Every single October we have Fire Prevention Week, in which we go out in the community, we try to educate as many kids as we can, on how to be safe if there was a fire in their house, in the school, across the board,” says Curtis Sjodin, fire prevention officer.

Sjodin adds spreading information to the youth is important as it allows them to share it with their guardian at home.

Fire Prevention Week this year is Oct. 9-15 and the theme is Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.

Sjodin says most fires at home are started in the kitchen.

“If you are cooking in the kitchen, stay in the kitchen with your food, don’t overload electrical, obviously, keep matches and lighters away from the youth of our community, so put those where they can’t be reached,” he says.

It has been a couple of years since the local fire department presented in schools, due to the pandemic. However, the department will make up for its absence this year, as 23 schools will be visited.
