Fire Prevention Week: ‘Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape’

Oct 11, 2022 | 4:40 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – This week is the National Fire Protection Association’s 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week.

“Fire Prevention Week is really just educating the public on hazards in their household, different things they can do to prevent fires,” says Jason Linton, emergency services coordinator and Cypress County fire chief. “If a fire does happen, have a really good plan so your family understands how to get out, where to meet, call 911 and let them know what’s going on.”

Linton adds when calling 911 be sure to have a good description, know your address, and once the house is left, do not go back inside.

Each year Fire Prevention Week has different slogans, and this year it’s “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”

The Cypress County fire department will be conducting a series of events in an open house this Saturday at the Dunmore fire station from 8 a.m. to 1 pm.

“We are gonna have different booths, we are going to demonstrate all the different divisions within the fire department,” he says. “We are going to have all our different equipment on display, we’re gonna have a lot of firefighters from up in the county be in there, from all the different nine stations. And we are going to have a pancake breakfast by donation to support HALO, so all the proceeds are going to HALO.”

Linton adds a barbecue to support HALO, a bouncy castle for the kids, and a fire extinguisher use demonstration will also take place.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week is from Oct. 9-15.
