Sep 24, 2022 | 8:15 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–Conduct and competency complaints involving Alberta teachers are going to be handled by a new teaching profession commissioner.

The Provincial Government announced this week that Julia Sproule, a lawyer and senior leader with knowledge of the education system has been appointed to the role.

She will lead the new Alberta Teacher Profession Commission which was announced back in March of this year.

Sproule was appointed following an open public recruitment process.

Alberta is the only province which still has a teachers union handling all complaints of alleged unprofessional conduct made against members.

Moving to this model brings Alberta in line with the rest of the country. “The legal expertise and senior leadership capability Ms. Sproule brings to the table, along with her knowledge of the education system, are great assets for this important role”, said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education.

The commission will begin addressing complaints on January 1st, 2023.
