Run for the Cure looking for more runners and walkers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There isn’t a long history of the CIBC Run for the Cure in Medicine Hat, but there has been a big impact.

The first run held here was in 2016 and in the first five years nearly $170,000 was raised for the Canadian Cancer Society and breast cancer research and support. At this year’s run on Oct. 2 organizers hope to add $15,000 to the total.

Raising money is the purpose of the day, but breast cancer survivors and those currently battling it are also a big part of it.

“What we always try to make sure is that we have individuals that have gone through or have had breast cancer and are survivors or even individuals that are currently going through breast cancer treatment,” says local director of community engagement Justin Jones. “And we just like to have them here, share their stores and make it known that it is something that is affecting our community and affecting people that we see and deal with every single day.”

Jones says breast cancer affects one out of eight women in Canada.

Registration on Oct. 2 begins at 8 a.m. at the Kin Coulee Park bandshell and the one- or five-kilometre run or walk will start around 9 a.m., just after the Participants of Hope are recognized.

You can register for the event, donate and get more information at cibcrunforthecure.com or the local Facebook page.
