No stopping Vincent Massey students’ support for Terry Fox

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A little rain couldn’t stop Vincent Massey School from showing their continued support for Terry Fox this afternoon.

Teacher Stacey McBain says Vincent Massey has participated in the Terry Fox School Run for about 20 years, and she told the students that Terry ran in the rain and so they will too.

Clad in jackets and holding umbrellas, the students walked from the school, went down the trail along McCutcheon Drive and back.

McBain says leading up to today they’ve taught students about Terry’s legacy of setting goals and doing everything possible to achieve them.

“Right from Grade 1 we teach them of who Terry Fox was as a Canadian hero. I know up in Grade 5 and 6 they often do writing and talk about different character traits and how they would connect to Terry Fox in that way,” she says. “The message that we try to put forth is to set goals and not give up on yourself and just to work as a family and a team to help towards a common goal.”

Grade 5 student Evelyn Ewen says she thinks it’s great that Terry Fox did his Marathon of Hope in 1980 “because he brought awareness to Canada of cancer and raised over a million dollars.”

This month students have brought Toonies for Terry to the school, which in past years has raised between $600 and $1,200. They won’t know this year’s final tally until next week and will then send that money to the Terry Fox Foundation.
