Rattlers win individual and team titles at ACAC golf south tournament

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat College Rattlers men’s golf team was dominant this past weekend at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Golf South Regional tournament at Desert Blume Golf Course.

Chase Broderson won the men’s individual competition, finishing the tournament at 6-under with a two-day score of 138. That put him two strokes ahead teammate of Jayden Dudas who finished second with a 4-under score of 140.

The team win also belongs to the Rattlers, who ended the weekend with a 4-over par total score of 580. The SAIT Trojans finished 37 strokes behind with a score of 617. The Concordia Thunder finished third at 716 and Portage College came fourth at 786.

The other members of the Rattlers squad were Colby Friedrich (+1), Matt Taylor (+14) and Brady Deboice (+15)

On the women’s side, the Rattlers placed second with a two-day score of 400, edging out Concordia University of Edmonton by five strokes. SAIT won the event with a score of 348.

Libby Bourassa was the top Rattler golfer at 40-over par 184, good for fourth place. SAIT’s Kristine Dixon and Concordia’s Ella Gifford finished tied for first with matching two-day scores of 24-over, 168.

Jaci Bertram (+75) and Amaly Bartman (+81) rounded out the Rattlers team.

The Rattlers will tee up at the 2022 ACAC Golf Championship in Edmonton beginning Friday.

On Monday, the Rattlers announced the golf program has been awarded a 2022 Golf Canada Foundation Collegiate Grant.

Silver in cross-country

Rattlers runner Becky Ross reached the podium in her second-ever ACAC cross-country race on Saturday. Ross won the silver medal in the women’s race at ACAC 2 – The Jordan Fish Memorial in Calgary. Her time of 25:33 on the six-kilometre course was 59 seconds behind winner Jenica Swartz of Red Deer Polytechnic.

Ross’ teammate Cheldynn Molnar placed 12th.

In the men’s 8 km race, second-year runner Brannon Sumner was the fastest Rattler, finishing in 13th in a time of 31:49. Four other Rattlers followed – Jaiden Romanuik (16th), Gage Smith (19th), Harrison Lawson (25th), and Carson Schiller (26th). Collectively, the Rattlers ran their way to fourth in the team competition behind Red Deer Poly, SAIT, and Lethbridge College.

Next for the Rattlers runners is the Concordia Open in Edmonton on Oct. 1.
