MEDICINE HAT, AB – After starting their seasons on the road, the Medicine Hat College Rattlers soccer teams are each back on the home pitch for two games this weekend.

The Rattlers welcome the SAIT Trojans on Saturday for the 2022-23 home openers, followed by the Olds Broncos on Sunday.

First-year coach Sam Heap says he’s looking forward to playing in front of the Medicine Hat crowd and wants to see a positive performance

“So for us, that would be putting on a performance that we’re proud of,” he said Friday. “Taking the result out of it, have we given everything we can to the cause? Have we got sweat on the shirt? is my, kind of my phrase at the moment and really giving the fans something to watch and enjoy really and kind of represent us.”

Last weekend in Lethbridge the men’s team earned a 2-2 draw with the Kodiaks while the women’s team was on the wrong end of an 8-0 final.

Heap called the men’s game a fantastic result and provided a benchmark for them for this weekend and the rest of the season. He said he wants to see more of the same effort, endeavour and spirit

“Team spirit’s a big thing for us this year because we know where we are in terms of the league and our ability as a team,” he said. “What we need is to utilize and get the most out of our united front and our spirit and endeavour and stuff like that to really get positive results.”

On the women’s side have a place to develop from as a team and individuals.

Heap said he doesn’t think many of them are proud of last week and hopes watching game film this week will provide a spark for them to give a little more. He added it’s a young and inexperienced team that lacks bench depth with only 14 or 15 players.

“We have to dig deep together we have to look to just put positive performances and positive developing performances on the back of each other, so you take results out of it,” Heap said. That’s the thing that’s going to be a lot of my message this season: are we developing as a team, are we developing as individuals and look to build for this, for the end of this year, building on next year and so forth and so forth.”

On both days the women kick things off at noon, with the men’s game starting at 2 p.m.
