Suspect in deadly stabbing found dead, the other still at large

MEDICINE HAT, AB – One of the suspects wanted in a deadly stabbing rampage in Saskatchewan has been found dead.

RCMP confirmed this afternoon that Damien Sanderson was found outdoors in a heavily grassy area on the James Cree First Nation.

During a media conference on Monday afternoon, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said “At 11:30 a.m. a deceased male was located on the James Smith Cree Nation, at 1:17 pm today it was confirmed by the Saskatchewan RCMP forensic investigation section that the deceased is Damien Sanderson.”

Sanderson had visible wounds and his body was located near a home that was being examined.

RCMP believe his brother Myles may have sustained injuries and could be seeking medical attention.

Myles Sanderson is still considered armed and dangerous and anyone who spots him is asked to call 911 immediately.

An autopsy will be done to determine Damien Sanderson’s exact cause of death. RCMP are looking into whether his brother is responsible for his death as his wounds are not believed to be self inflicted.

The incidents began early Sunday morning on the James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN), 58 kilometres east of Prince Albert when RCMP received a report of a stabbing around 5:40 a.m.

In the minutes that followed, they received many more reports. Police confirmed a total of 13 crime scenes between JSCN and the community of Weldon. They believe some of the attacks were targeted and some were random.

Myles Sanderson has now been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of break and enter.

The death toll from the rampage now stands at 11 with 19 injured.
