More parts of Echo Dale reopening this weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – More features of Echo Dale Regional Park will reopen on Saturday, just over one month since a summer storm whipped through the area and damaged or destroyed around 60 trees.

Park visitors will once again be able to access the Echo Dale Campground and the off-leash area within the park. The road leading to the campground and off-leash area will also be open to pedestrians and vehicles.

“We’re excited to be able to reopen these remaining areas of the park following such extensive damage from the storm in July,” says Dave Genio, manager of parks with the City of Medicine Hat. “Crews are still working within the park, and will be for some time, so we ask all visitors to continue giving them room to work.”

Genio says there are 10 individual sites available to book at the campground, providing access to the park, the swim lake and trail system.

The city says the boating lake remains closed to boats, including canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, but the lake will be open for fishing. The picnic areas east of the boat lake will remain closed until the end of the summer season due to significant hazards which remain in the area.

The swim lake will close earlier than usual for the season as many children and teens, including the park’s seasonal staff, return to school at the end of the month.

The last day of summer operations, including the Swim Centre, is Aug. 28. Staff will begin draining the lake the following day.
